Service with the CHORE Project: 10-31-15

This past Saturday the Ravens gathered for their final outing of the Fall 2015 season. Each time the Ravens are together, I leave the outing feeling so happy and this particular day was no exception. The girls completed their service outing with grace, humility, and love.

We arrived at our service site during a wind and rain storm. Each girl hesitantly came out of the car not knowing how this project would work considering the weather and our task. Our day started with an introduction to the CHORE project from Abby Lund and then we met our host. For this particular project, the Ravens were tasked with helping to move a massive rock collection outside. Our host had collected thousands of rocks over the course of her life, and the Ravens helped to sort and store these rocks outside. We broke into groups: sorters, transporters, and storers. This helped keep our host's house free of muddy boots, and allowed each of us to settle in to a job.

The project asked lots of patience, respect, and humor from our girls. The task itself was kind of goofy, but these rocks meant the world to our host, and each of the Ravens allowed our host the time and space necessary to figure out how she wanted to handle each type of rock.

After our project, we walked over to Wade King elementary school where we really reflected on the project and talked about our final season as a group. We talked about aging, loneliness, mental illness, love, gratitude, and the importance of the CHORE project. I was blown away by the empathy of the Ravens. They understood the complexity of our host's life, and how important it was to help her with this project even if these rocks will just sit in buckets outside.

We finished our day with a discussion about our final season. The Ravens get to come up with their final service project and then we have one epic weekend adventure out at Bob's Cabin on Cascade River Rd. The final season for Explorers Club is so fun and filled with rich experiences.
